From what I understand, the 5000 series is the final generation of CPUs using the AM4 socket. Upgrading will be limited once AM5 arrives. It seems AM5 will remain compatible in future models. What are your thoughts? Would anyone consider purchasing an end-of-life chipset? Note: the main point is needing a working computer right away.

I usually purchase a motherboard and processor, so this being the final slot on the AM4 socket isn’t important to me at all.

since the better-performing model is available now, it makes more sense to purchase it. the other option is either waiting or acquiring additional intel, which typically comes with a new chipset each time. if i plan to upgrade my platform—whether cpu, motherboard, or memory—I aim to maintain the same overall setup for 2 to 4 years. this means even if i bought a first-generation Ryzen, by the time the AM4 platform ends, i’d likely still be using that same model. i also expect to replace all three components together: cpu, motherboard, and probably a newer memory type (from DDR3 to DDR4 and beyond).

Perhaps individuals are transitioning from zen+ due to budget constraints or simply desire the latest models. Many opt to trade in older items for newer ones, which isn't too difficult. Platforms like eBay and Craigslist have plenty of options.

I believe a CPU upgrade route is often unnecessary. I don't purchase CPUs outright; I select components that fit my build. The path to updating a CPU tends to be secondary, since by the time it becomes worthwhile, the system may have advanced further and could be improved independently. I currently have a Zen 2 on an older motherboard. Although I don’t require it, I find it slightly bothersome that PCIe 4.0 isn't available. Zen 3 should likely offer the best performance for general tasks in the next year or so. A CPU upgrade usually makes sense only if you're already on Zen 2, but it can still provide a solid boost if you're still on a lower end like 4 or 6 cores and aiming for more cores.

Same reasons individuals chose the 7th and 9th generation Intel chips were performance benefits. For special use cases needing reliability, newer platforms often come with initial challenges. New systems usually experience some setup hurdles.

For my own purposes, I fully support that idea; I frequently convert the old CPU+mobo into a server setup, especially when upgrading, which means it doesn’t make sense to purchase just the CPU. Moreover, locally it’s much simpler to sell the combined mobo+CPU as a package rather than buying them separately, so again, it would be more practical for me to upgrade both and resell the older components as a bundled kit.

The i5-3350p is clearly underperforming, yet my opinion is it will eventually be outdated regardless. I currently have the C2D e8400, which was over a decade ago, and the X570 remains reliable. With Zen 3, stability should improve compared to the previous generation.
