Why is my internet upload speed so slow?
I ran a speed test and saw your upload speed is significantly lower than your download speed. For online gaming, download speed usually matters more, but it depends on the game type. To boost your upload speed without changing your service, you could try optimizing your connection or using a wired Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. The typical average speeds in the US vary, but most households fall between 50–100 Mbps download and 10–30 Mbps upload.
It's typical for internet companies to offer lower upload speeds compared to download speeds, which likely explains the speed gap you're seeing. For online gaming, you only require modest download and upload rates, so your connection performs well in both directions. A high ping is more important in this case.
Comcast only provides 5Mhz to 42Mhz on the coax for upstream, which is quite restricted. Docsis 3.1 could boost this range, but they haven’t begun the upgrades yet—likely because of expenses. Their top upload speed is around 45 Mbps, but just for the gigabit plan. This isn’t because they prefer it; replacing many networking devices across their offices would be costly and complex. As @Lurick noted, the next Docsis standard will arrive on the horizon with similar benefits. Don’t expect them to roll it out soon. I’ve heard they trimmed their upgrade budget since Net Neutrality was reinstated.
