I bought an i5 2500k to swap in for my i3. The temperatures stay stuck in the high 90s, and when I play games it stutters. I changed the stock heatsink to match the one from my old i3, but the temps are still the same. I’m not sure why my old CPU never got that hot.

Was es dir vielleicht vorgekommen ist, den Wärmeleitpaste zwischen Kühler und CPU auszutauschen?

Thermal paste was applied incorrectly. The CPU is automatically adjusting its voltage, possibly using more power than necessary. The cooler isn’t installed correctly. This issue might be related to the motherboard model.

The current chip displays its time, and the old I3 model used a stock cooler. Yes, you're likely still using that cooler.

My i3 model is a 2100, but I'm switching from the i3 stock cooler to the i5 stock cooler for testing. I ran some checks and the temperatures stayed around the 90s, so it seems the i5 cooler works fine.

It makes sense that the i5 would consume more power due to its higher core count and faster speed. Using the built-in cooler should help as long as it operates at normal speeds in typical conditions. Your room’s temperature is likely around the 20s °C, and it’s reaching 3.7 GHz. Possible reasons could include the chip being overclocked or a subpar cooling setup, which we can eliminate if it isn’t overclocked.

It was configured at 3.7Ghz, then adjusted to 3.5 and 3Ghz, yet temperatures stayed unchanged.

Verify the voltage, as it should generally reflect a proportional relationship; unusual behavior might indicate an issue. Use tools such as HWmonitor or CPU-Z for inspection.

I also changed the thermal paste to a newer version.

It looks like a poor mount overall, though switching between modes without problems suggests you're familiar with the process. It feels unusual if you didn't run into issues with the i3. At this stage, I'm running low on options.
