Why is my CPU crashing like this?
During gameplay, my screen goes black intermittently, audio becomes misaligned, and the system freezes repeatedly. The entire setup feels unresponsive, even though Windows appears to be running normally. The CPU indicator light turns red. If the CPU is faulty, how can I reliably test it? Should I consider using warranty service based on this situation? I purchased the motherboard in October after similar issues with the previous one, yet the problem persists. It seems the CPU might be the root cause. I’m currently using afterburner and HWmonitor continuously, with no other unusual symptoms.
Run memtest86 for fun—bad RAM can really mess with the CPU on mobos, and it's way simpler to test than the hardware. Faulty CPUs are rare, but sometimes they're the real culprits. PS: I tried something similar and ended up with a failing hard drive. I didn’t even check debug lights; I just knew it’d be tough to solve. The real clue came from userbenchmark, which kept saying both faulty drives were underperforming.
It's interesting I purchased this RAM kit in January 2021. The issue has been present since last year with the older model. I ran memtest86 on the latest one—2 to 4 passes, except for the hammer test, which showed no errors. From a logical standpoint, the RAM should be error-free now.
It seems this might involve both CPU and hard drive issues. I'd investigate storage drivers and ensure you're using the standard Microsoft ones instead of AMD alternatives. This process usually involves testing components until the defective one is identified, assuming a hardware problem.
Apologies for the mistake. I’ll check it out. Both storage units are at least a year old or newer. The crashes also occur on my Linux drive, though less frequently.
@Mark Kaine Btw, What did you mean by this? " you should be using the generic Microsoft ones *not* the AMD ones. " you mean the raid driver? Also on the linux drive I found this using GsmartControl- basically GUI for smartctl "Description","Value","Flags","Page, Offset" " Number of Mechanical Start Failures","6","---","0x03, 0x030" & "Description","Value","Flags","Page, Offset" " Number of Reported Uncorrectable Errors","1","---","0x04, 0x008" So how bad does that sound? but my Windows crashes too and its installed on an SSD. So hmm...
