Why is Minecraft crashing when you first start it?
Every time I open Minecraft, my computer goes blue screen. I click the play button on the launcher, and that little window pops up. It shows the red Mojang logo and a white progress bar. Sometimes, right before everything loads, it crashes again. Other times, I get into the main menu (where you can choose single player or multiplayer), but then it goes blue screen after about three seconds at most. The error codes change a lot—sometimes it's a watchdog, sometimes an IRQL page not handled, maybe just some system exception. I've tried reinstalling the launcher from minecraft.net and also from the Microsoft store. I moved my installation files to another drive (an M.2 SSD). I updated my drivers and Windows. I even reinstalled Java and told Minecraft to use a specific version instead of the one bundled with it. None of that worked. My computer is very powerful: an i9-10900k CPU overclocked to 5.0GHz, a 3080 FE graphics card, 32GB of RAM, a Z490-E gaming motherboard, and I recently installed Minecraft on my second computer (used for streaming). It runs fine there. The game even works perfectly with CurseForge. No crashes or lag. Also, memtest found no problems with my memory after several hours and many passes.
Have you tried opening the minecraft folder, finding an exe file, right-clicking it, selecting properties, checking the compatibility tab, turning on "run as administrator," clicking apply, and finally trying it from your desktop or start menu to see if it runs?
I just tried this thing, but it made my computer screen go blue again and quit faster. I also could not open that small window with the Mojang logo and the white line showing how much time passed. Just clicked play then a second or two later everything went black.
So which programs or files did you download and install once Minecraft started working well? Are you using any special antivirus program besides the built-in Windows protection?
I think I figured it out, but I don't really know why. Well I do know why I can't say that. So I reset everything again, wondering if it was a Windows update problem since my PC still has the message saying "Your important updates are missing." So I installed one thing at a time and opened Minecraft to see if it worked. All the other things have been fixed so far: drivers are set up, and Minecraft is running fine. The only change now is that I cleared my BIOS settings hoping something inside there caused the problem. After I did that Minecraft started working right away, which made me think maybe my CPU overclock was broken because when I launched it after the launcher, my CPU would hit 100%. So I decided to let my PC run a normal boosted setting and it worked perfectly. That made me realize my OC must have been bad, so I went back into my BIOS and tried a new one (5.0 GHz with better voltage). I used cinbench for a few hours but none of those new settings would work. So I said what the heck and went back to my old settings (5.0 GHz at 1.350v), opened Minecraft, and it worked fine. Like I told you before Windows updates are all set up (except the ones that aren't showing up because of my problem with those missing updates) and graphics drivers are installed too. My next best guess is my RAM is causing issues; I haven't turned on my XMP profile yet. But I'm slowly setting things up now and opening Minecraft twice each time to make sure the new program wasn't the cause. I'll leave the RAM for last because if it is, I might be stuck since I ran a MemTest yesterday for about three hours and there were zero errors. Guess I'll check back in later, wish me luck.
Looks like I got it sorted out. No more problems coming up after my last message. My memory stick (RAM) is set to the XMP setting of 2, and I've downloaded all the software I need. It's not exactly clear why this is working for me, but I'm still happy about it!
