Checking the Internet Status shows I'm using a lot of data. When my internet was full, usage dropped to just 1 MB. Then I watched a 480P video for half an hour and it used 9 MB. After that, nothing happened for a few seconds; no downloads or ads running, so even with adblock installed (and removed later), the problem kept happening. When I checked again after those seconds, usage jumped up to 197 MB. Even when I'm not using anything else, it keeps eating data and goes over 300 MB before coming back down. The fact is my internet connection is actually getting used up from this, which proves it's not just a glitch on the screen.

go ahead and log into your Google account. make sure "keep going" is turned on for that background task. try using incognito mode, or even better, run a virus scan on your computer just in case something bad is hiding there.

Even when Chrome looks like it's just sitting there, check out the three dots in the top right corner and click on More Tools. Then go to the Network tab. You should see if any websites are using up too much of your internet speed.
