The majority of what you mentioned comes from the netcode and the frequency at which various elements are refreshed. It's 60Hz, yet it's clear that many updates happen only at 30Hz. This is similar to how CSGO runs at 64 or 128 Hz, but demos typically display at 32Hz and used to be 16Hz. You'll see distinct differences.

It's affordable both to purchase and maintain (from a PC standpoint). It's an older title. The original version was also among the most beloved first-person shooters ever—before competitive gaming became mainstream. It lacks depth in storytelling, lore, or history, which appeals to many players. You can enjoy it without needing to play earlier releases. It's also straightforward; anyone can jump in, though becoming proficient takes time. Unlike CS:GO, it doesn't demand complex mechanics, making it accessible. No issues with bugs—though mastering it still requires considerable skill compared to other shooters. Its strong esports following has boosted its popularity as gaming culture expands. Fans of teams now seek out the same games they watch on their squads.

Top level openings are common, but for many it's the personalities seen on stream that drew them in. For others who've been through since CS1.6/CSS, it feels more like a smooth natural move. The big challenge is clearly mastering the game to shine in competitive play across different maps and weapons—MLG just hosted the first North American CS GO Major with a $1 million prize pool, so you should definitely check out the highlights. Plus, you'll see exciting moments like these and dream of one day experiencing it yourself.

It's really enjoyable and extremely challenging to excel at. Plus, all the other factors mentioned by the previous contributors apply here. Bf4 works, but it's quite unique.

Typically straightforward games are easier to grasp. It's not about mastering every unit, hero, skill, item, or race like in LoL/Dota2 or SC2. With CS, you just need to understand that one team is attacking while another defends. Weapons are based on real-world concepts, so anyone familiar with news or history can see the difference between a pistol and an assault rifle. Moreover, CS has been around for 17 years—perfect timing to grow a fan base.
