Why is a 6700k overclock causing problems?
I recently started having trouble in games because my 6700k is too slow, so I decided to overclock it. But somehow, I can't actually do that. I turned off all power saving features in my BIOS and set the CPU speed to its maximum. When Windows starts up, the CPU only goes up to 4.2 gigahertz even though I set a higher target of 4.3 ghz on CPU-Z. I tried going up to 4.4 or 4.5 ghz just to check if it shows the real speed, but nothing changes. Even with my XMP profile turned on and my RAM clock showing right in the software, my motherboard is a Gigabyte Z170-XP rev1, and someone else did a full guide for this exact setup too, but copying their settings didn't work either. I have 16GB of RAM running at 2400 megahertz. Any help before I try changing the base clock would be great, thanks!
Ok, I'm really stuck here. I have no idea what is wrong with this thing. I didn't get any results when I tried faster clock speeds in Windows, so I started trying a higher BCLK frequency instead of keeping it at 100mhz. I went up to about 104.9 instead of the original 100. I thought my CPU was actually running at 4.4Ghz because CPU-Z said that, but it says my multiplier is x42 even though it's set to x43 in BIOS. MSI afterburner also reports my core speed as 4.2Ghz, and task manager shows the same thing too. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Well, I didn't know how it worked at first, but I found a way around it. I need to overclock my CPU by using the intel turbo feature. I have to manually set all cores of that function to the exact multiplier that I want... turns out, this is working now. Pretty weird 🤷♂️
