Hi,
I purchased an RM1000x PSU from Corsair a few years back, which is a 1000W ATx power supply. I assumed ATx was the norm and could simply swap it for the PSU in my PC built in 2010. However, I chose to replace one output cable at a time from the previous 550W unit. The issue started when I encountered the first power cable I used.
The 2010 motherboard features a 2x2 socket, indicated by a green arrow in this photo:

The RM1000x doesn’t come with a 2x2 output cable. It has many sockets and plenty of double-ended cables, which you connect at one end to the PSU and the other end to the motherboard.
Eventually, I realized I had to revert back to the old 550W power supply.
I believed ATx was a standard, so any ATx power supply should work with any ATx motherboard.
Appreciate any assistance you can provide.

It definitely includes the required cables.
The 2x2 is referred to as a 4-pin CPU power cable (ATX 12V 4-pin). It isn't called 2x2.
You can find a 4-pin CPU power plug that matches an 8-pin CPU power plug. It can be divided into two separate plugs.

There are several 4-pin CPU cables available. Some are bundled as double 8-pin cables that need to be separated.

For example, a PSU from 2010 could work with a motherboard from today, provided the power needs are compatible. Similarly, a modern PSU might fit an older motherboard, though compatibility depends on specific power demands.
I’m not sure if the ATx standard is strictly tied only to the tower case, PSU, and motherboard, or if it also covers other parts like graphics cards and memory slots.

Power needs depend on the parts you have.
Therefore - No. A low-quality 250W power supply can't supply enough energy for a high-performance gaming setup (such as one with a 450W RTX 4090).
ATX specifications include
case size, motherboard specs,
PSU capacity and connectors.
Current graphics cards fit the PCIe standard,
and modern RAM complies with the DDR standard.

Is power the sole issue when connecting arbitrary ATx devices?
I experienced difficulties with my USB2 wireless connection, where the sonar icon disappears from the desktop and there’s no internet. When I remove either the wireless adapter or the hub and then reconnect, it reappears.

I have numerous peripherals attached to the computer, such as solid-state drives via motherboard SATA ports, and initially suspected power problems.
When I reconnected the old 550W power supply, with cables directly from the PSU and not double-sided like the Corsair, I also removed the sound card in an effort to lower power consumption, which reduced the wireless vanishing issue. However, it still disappears.

I’m planning to try connecting a 1000W Corsair instead. After photographing the socket, I forgot to reconnect it, and I no longer received a video image. Eventually, I considered it might be a 2x2 socket, and reconnecting that cable restored the video feed.

I’m uncertain whether the USB2 circuitry can degrade over time or if the wireless vanishing is more likely due to insufficient power.
I also observed that some USB ports on the computer result in significantly slower webpage loading speeds. I’m unsure if certain ports are USB1.
If USB2 is backward compatible, it seems unnecessary to have USB1-only sockets.
I once purchased a USB3 card, but using it for graphics-intensive tasks like pixel-perfect HD screensavers caused the machine to crash. Upon inspection, the graphics card became excessively hot near the USB3 port, leading me to suspect heat was affecting its performance or power draw. I removed the card and no further issues arose.

If the USB2 circuitry deteriorates, could I still use a USB2 connection via another card through its sockets?
I’m building a new PC with modern components, but as a temporary solution, it would be helpful if the USB2 functionality could be restored.
