Actually, it's cool that it looks good on paper, but the real problem is bigger because there are way more devices using the same chip than anyone can actually give it to. The factory only makes so many addresses, yet they keep making far too many units in a single year. This forces them to reuse old chips over and over. Also, if you look at smaller groups based on who builds them for, it gets even harder. I remember back when I worked there; we planned to use the MAC address for tracking things like laptops. But then someone found out that some of our addresses were actually the same as others. If you only buy 100 laptops, you might not notice the issue. But if a company buys 10,000 in one year, they definitely end up with duplicates.
Yeah, I don't think you get how huge this MAC address pool is... It takes 48 bits, which means there are over 281 trillion possible values. Manufacturers aren't at risk of running out because they generally do not create duplicate numbers. Only if a user turns on MAC randomization can it happen that duplicates occur. In simple terms, the NSA used to track tens of millions of people by recording their cell phone MAC addresses as they moved across the US. That leak forced all major phone companies to start using MAC randomization so no two phones have the same address.
Actually, they do happen. Back when I worked at Time Warner Cable in San Diego installing RoadRunner, I ran into no less than eight Motorola cable modems that had the exact same MAC addresses. Even back then, there were lots of times when Intel and 3Com NICs got duplicated MACs while setting up networks for hundreds or thousands of computers over the years. I still have two of those in my home collection now. Back then, MAC randomization wasn't used here either.
Have you checked your settings for downloads? Make sure the location is near where you play, turn off any limits, and make sure streaming or playing game features aren't blocked.
If you don't have it yet, try putting that drive onto your Samsung 970 EVO. What model of SSD are you trying to put in here?
I put this drive on my SN750, but it acts just like the 970 EVO even though both drives are great and don't get hot from gaming. When I check with HWMonitor during installation, the temps stay under 40 degrees Celsius unless the GPU was already working really hard before, at which point they might hit around 50 or 55 degrees. The only time the SSD gets warm on its own is when I'm doing heavy tasks like copying files back and forth because that pushes them close to their maximum speed limits.
Can we try using a different server? Maybe yours is just too busy with all the work. Go into Settings and pick the city or server that feels closest to you. Usually, it will go slower or at the same speed unless you're in a really crowded spot. If it goes faster than normal, maybe you're just located near other people who are using the internet a lot. Did your friend get 1 Gbps download? Have you tried comparing settings with them? Could he come over to your place, set up something and see how fast he gets?
I am avoiding questions like this. I live in an area where four counties don't even count up to 40k people. Of course I switched my Steam servers and yes I took my PC over there and downloaded things getting the same results, and they brought laptops over to my place and got gig download speeds on steam through their machines. All of the simplest things to take like these suggestions I have done countless times. I need someone who knows a little more than that to reply.
