Why does HDR dim on Windows 11?
Why does HDR dim on Windows 11?
I have an ASUS ROG Swift PG329Q 32” monitor with Windows 11. When I activate HDR, it unexpectedly returns to normal brightness. It remains in HDR mode but fades back down. Sometimes it stays in HDR for over six hours, while other times it dims within one to two hours. This behavior occurs during gaming sessions, while watching videos, or even when idle on the desktop. I can quickly re-enable it, and it will resume its random dimming pattern again until it returns to HDR. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Hey there,
Have you explored the monitor driver for your device? I haven’t installed Armoury crate, but the driver and utility could be useful. Also, have you checked if all your system drivers are current? Could you share the remaining specifications of your PC?
Device name is xxxx
Processor is Intel® Core i9-10900K CPU @ 3.70GHz, running at 3.70 GHz
Installed RAM is 32.0 GB
System type features a 64-bit operating system with an x64-based processor
GPU is RTX 3080 Ti
System drivers are current; I'm checking if updating would help. It has maintained full HDR without dimming all day, so I'll wait before installing new ones to ensure a clean setup.
I recommend examining the HDR options more closely.
Note:
Microsoft HDR Settings
Are multiple displays enabled?
Check Settings > System > Display > HDR
It's a display, and after checking the adjustments, nothing stands out as problematic.
Consider checking Relibility History/Monitor and Event Viewer to see if either might record any error codes, warnings, or events around the dimming time. Even though the dimming happens randomly, these logs could reveal something useful. Start with Reliability History—it’s easier for users and may show a pattern. Event Viewer takes longer to use but can provide detailed information. Take your time; don’t rush.
