Why can't I see my gadgets on the network, even though they seem to be online?
Good evening. I have a Verizon G3100 and I am trying to use parental controls for my kids' iPads. The problem is, I can't see those devices through their MAC addresses. I don't see any of my iPads or iPhones listed in the device list. Any idea why this is happening? Thanks so much!
I haven't used a Verizon router since a long time ago, but why would I just type my MAC address? It seems odd if they had to be actually active on the network when you set up rules. Parental control is almost useless even when kids don't try hard to sneak past it...like changing their MAC address for example. I can't believe all that garbage in newer manuals. They talk about filtering by keyword inside a URL, but websites have been encrypted for nearly 10 years now. The router cannot see anything except IP addresses. Even the last hole that let people snoop DNS has been closed after using encrypted DNS. At best parental controls can block lists of IP addresses, but that isn't so good anymore since everything is virtual and runs in multiple cloud locations. Now if you are trying to do something simple like block all access to some device at certain times of day, that will work fine. But note if you have another router in your network it might be hiding the MAC addresses of the end devices...also a way sneaky kids bypass parental controls.
