These brief moments aren’t fixed videos; they can be generated at any frame rate to achieve the desired visual quality.

If the cut-scene appeared overly polished compared to the rest of the game, it could feel out of place and diminish the overall experience. By creating it within the engine, it blends seamlessly with the gameplay, offering a smoother shift between scenes.

many of them are just clips, which is why FPS spikes dramatically during certain scenes (or reach 60fps).

I generally avoid pre-recorded cutscenes since they can be distracting. This is because they were filmed in a different environment than the one you're playing in, and they often run at a different frame rate than your game.

Keep most of the work in memory. The rendered view uses less storage than fully pre-rendered content.

Imagine you’re in Witcher 3. Before the cut scene, you hold a sword in your hand. When the scene starts, that sword stays there to feel more authentic. If it were a pre-rendered cut scene, the developer would have placed the sword inside its sheath.

Additionally, any modifications to your armor will affect the final visuals. For instance, Shadow of Mordor features pre-rendered cut scenes that alter your character's appearance during cutscenes, which can feel quite abrupt.

Many games relied on them before real-time graphics became more advanced. They now account for about 80% of total assets. Today there are plenty of reasons to include them directly in games.

Creating pre-rendered quick time events would be extremely challenging.
