I’m still getting familiar with PC components and parts. I noticed the i7-12700 has a rectangular CPU ID, which is different from the typical square form factor you’re used to. It’s kind of eye-straining to look at it like that. Would you like some tips on what square CPUs usually look like?

They probably thought it would work best in a rectangle for optimal fit or appearance. There might have been additional considerations beyond that.

AMDs Threadripper delivers an impressive experience. The dimensions or aspect ratio are designed to fit the delicate silicon wafer inside. With modern advancements, multiple wafers can now be integrated onto one chip, eliminating the need for traditional square shapes.

It's due to the LGA 1700 connector design, which is rectangular by nature. The socket's shape came about because Intel required additional pins inside the processor (1700 versus 1200), and the optimal choice was to make it longer.

When planning a CPU socket layout, the main consideration is often trace distance, since it affects signal integrity. Even if one shape provides slightly better performance than another, they’ll choose the one with the shorter trace. The variation is usually minimal, but small changes can save money during design and, over millions of units, make a noticeable impact.

This provides information about how the response should be rephrased.

Only you would understand... But there are plenty more to share.

I think once the cooler is in place and the case is secured, I won’t see it again for a while. As someone who is autistic, I’m sensitive to differences like square versus rectangle, and those small details can really bother me sometimes.
