Why are my downloads so slow even though my internet is really fast?
Hey So today a prebuild pc arrived one of those where you pick the parts and they put it together for you and while i'm sure any experienced pc expert here would feel despair looking at the parts list i have it and i'm trying to work with it. I have a few issues i need to figure out that are giving me an actual headache atm. The first being the internet speed. Despite the download speed being show below being really fast it seems to take forever to actually download even relatively small files. Here is an example of me trying to download a mod manager for rimworld. How does this make sense with my download speeds? I am someone who is horrible with anything pc related and my head hurts trying to figure out the worst of the issues i have been having so i hope to be able to fix some starting with this one. If anyone has suggestions on how to figure out what's making my downloads so slow despite the fast connection please let me know. Edit: But despite the slow browser downloads steam seems very fast? I am super confused Edit2: What does it mean by resuming? I have not downloaded that on this pc before yet.
Looks okay for now, but if you know what it could be, I'm still curious.
How fast do you actually get online? Sometimes it's faster than what you promised. My internet is fast, but the VPN makes it slow down a bit. I have a 500Mbps plan. Without the VPN, my speed is 600 Mbps. With the VPN turned on, my speed drops to below 500 Mbps.
I pay for internet that says "up to 1gb download," but it usually goes faster than 600mbps, so why am I feeling slow? Livestreams buffer a lot when I watch them. Images load in small pieces instead of smoothly. Some pages take too long to show up. Sometimes I get kicked out of games because my connection drops for a second or two. These things usually mean bad internet, but every time I run the speed test it shows fine speed. I also checked the ping on cloudflare five times using the cmd menu on someone's advice to see if there is packet loss, and the tests showed no problems there either. It feels like something really slows down my connection, but I don't know what's going on.
Usually, this happens because there is a bad driver in the network system. To fix it, try these steps: Open the Run box (Win+R) and type "ncpa.cpl" to open the Network Connections Control Panel dialog. Right-click on your active network adapter and choose Properties from the list that pops up. Look at all the checkboxes and write down which ones are checked so you know what they should be later. Uncheck every single box EXCEPT for 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)' (make sure only that one is checked). Click OK to close everything. Then shut your computer off and turn it back on to make sure the bad drivers don't start up right away. Now see how fast your downloads are going. If they go up, post pictures of your list of checkboxes online so I can tell you which ones you need to keep on. You might have to send more than one picture if there aren't enough in just one.
You must enable Client for Microsoft Networks and File & Printer Sharing because the Windows firewall relies on those settings. If you want to stream video or audio, then you need QoS Packet Scheduler turned on so that low latency traffic gets priority like streamed media. You also need both Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) enabled there is no reason not to turn IPv6 on now even if you don't use it regularly. If you have a VPN installed then you will need to enable the network driver for that connection, and any other third-party software or products in your list that uses these specific drivers. The rest of the boxes can stay unchecked. Those discovery protocol drivers are only needed when you are connected to a fairly big local area LAN; they help build out your network topology.
