I am really struggling with this and I want to throw out my hair at this point because it is happening so much now. I bought an HP Omen laptop with an RTX 2070 Max Q back a year ago, but I never had any issues before. Now, suddenly every single game is dropping frames in a way that has been going on for three days straight. Before the drop happens, my FPS stays steady between 70 and 80 depending on what game I'm playing. But after about ten minutes of gaming, suddenly it crashes to around 30 fps. That glitch only goes away when I restart the game (and then it comes back again). My graphics drivers are already updated, and I used Malwarebytes to clean up my computer; there were three bad files found, but they have all been removed now. I do not even know what is causing this problem. Any help would be super thankful because I really need to figure this out. My guess is that the external SSD might be the cause. On my C drive, I only installed Tekken 7 for about twenty minutes and it did not suddenly drop frames all of a sudden like the games on my external hard drive did. After optimizing my external SSD and running another scan for viruses, everything looks fine there too. I am completely lost about what to do next.

I don't see this problem with my external drives. If a drive unplugs, the game should crash or stop working. To be sure it's not that, I'll move the game to use my internal drive instead. While playing, I'll open MSI Afterburner and watch how hot the CPU gets and what speed it slows down to. It might happen because the computer is too hot after a while and can't keep up with the game. I'll also check if the graphics card is getting hot.

Thanks so much, buddy. My graphics card reached a high of 86 degrees. I looked at the temperature right after my game got slow down, and it stayed around 70 degrees. I'll listen to what you say and test how fast my CPU works too.

Usually it is the CPU doing the work. Are you using an Intel Core i7-10750H with a GeForce RTX 2070 Max Q? You might want to check how much power that processor gets.

Yeah, @Nighthawk117, maybe you're getting too hot because of throttling. An 86-degree GPU is near the limit where it slows down to protect itself. The CPU might be slowing down too, though. Have you cleaned your laptop or swapped thermal paste lately? If not, that could make a big difference. You might need to take it apart to clean the fans and put fresh thermal paste back on—that would help things cool down better. What model exactly do you have? I own an Omen 15, and it's actually pretty easy to open up for cleaning and re-pasting. There are probably some online guides or teardown videos for that one too.

Thanks so much for your help guys! You are actually right; it is CPU throttling. After downloading Afterburner and turning on a game to see what happens when the FPS drops, I never got there because while the game was loading, the CPU just shot up to 97 degrees Celsius. The laptop froze immediately. Not going to even boot up a new game until this gets fixed. What should I do? Clean out the fans and re-apply thermal paste?

Not too shocked that both fans are spinning? If you feel confident, take the back off and give it a good clean hold the fans steady while using compressed air to reapply paste to both the CPU and GPU. I use Noctua NT-H1 on my laptop. It really doesn't matter what paste you pick as long as it is a decent brand, but avoid liquid metal entirely. You can use IPA alcohol on a kitchen towel to remove the old paste from the heatsink and your CPU or GPU. If you don't have tools to open your laptop yet, I've used this method for years on many models and found it very effective here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/iFixit-EU1...-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1 If you haven't already, I'd recommend getting a cooling pad for your laptop. This stops hot air from piling up under the machine during heavy use. Something like this or a Cooler Master one would be my suggestion: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Targus-Coo...t=&hvlocphy=9046681&hvtargid=pla-813210189542 I should be careful buying generic ones because the quality can be very poor.

Totally agree with you, and I even had an old hard drive on my computer too. But this is not a good choice for laptops. It starts to fail after about two or three months (it might happen sooner if you use it heavily). NT-H2 is much better, and that's what I'm using now. There are no pump-up problems. ⛔ DO NOT use NOCTUA NT-H1 in your laptop ⛔ (pump out effect) - YouTube
