Why am I dropping frames on my Strix G17 with AMD?
Hey everyone, did any of you ever face this before? Or know some fixes for my problem? I bought a used laptop, the Strix G17, from a second-hand seller. It looked fine, no scratches or dents on the outside, the screen is clear, and the speakers and keys feel okay too. The battery is at only 11% charge, but that's nothing much for me to worry about. I took a little dust out with some cleaning and cleaned up the fans. I did a quick format of the hard drive (just Windows 10, no other stuff), then installed all the drivers and made sure everything was updated. At first, it worked pretty well, but soon after playing my first game, Apex Legends, the computer started dropping frames. It used to keep a steady 140 to 150 FPS, but suddenly it would drop down to just 20 FPS. I checked how much power both the CPU and GPU were using, and they went from 150 watts down to only 26 to 30 watts. This happened every single time after about three or four minutes of playing. It lasted for maybe three or five seconds while the game was running and also when I had nothing else doing. I tried a different power adapter (the one that came with my old Scar 17), but it didn't help at all. Then I did another format on the hard drive and it looked exactly the same way again. I'm not sure what's going on right now, and I'm just really tired from work so I couldn't test it much longer. I was just hoping you guys could give some input here. Best of luck to me while I check if it's still under warranty with ASUS. Thanks in advance!
Did you just format my device (just works with WIN10)? Where did you get my OS installer from and did you install and update all drivers, or did you install all the necessary drivers for my computer manually after I put it into offline mode to start up? Are there still some BIOS updates pending on your laptop?
Did you get this device formatted (but only works with WIN10)? Where did you buy or find that installer software for your operating system? Did you install and update all drivers, manually using a special command after installing the OS in offline mode? Is there still work left to do on your laptop's BIOS settings?
Where did you get your OS installer? I used a USB Creation Tool for Windows 10 from their website. After putting that down in offline mode, did you install all the drivers for your platform manually using an elevated command line? Let me tell you no (see below for stupid explanation). Your BIOS updates are pending on that laptop? None yet, the latest as of my last check with MyAsus. I went back into the in-game settings to check again. Suddenly, I set Vertical Sync to 'Dynamic' instead of 'Disabled', and for an hour it performed well with no drops. Then I moved on to test Rainbow Six Siege and got a stable 90-100+ FPS. So maybe just my stupid self hehehe. A bit weird because I did not experience this setting on the Delta 15 with the 6700M. Appreciate the response and interest.
