Who should manage the server?
I'm not sure if this fits the networking part of the forums, but it's about gaming. My friends and I enjoy playing games where one of us runs a private server to keep it exclusive. We all have different internet connections and speeds, with some having slower connections than others. I was wondering if the host's role affected who got the best experience. Would someone with the slowest connection benefit if the faster one took over? And would a slower connection still matter for overall server performance beyond just lag?
Ideally, the individual with the most stable and dependable link should manage the server. Minecraft and similar games generate relatively little data, so speed isn't a major factor; however, lag or latency will be the key area for improvement. For instance, if Person A is hosting over a DSL connection while Person B uses a fiber connection, I would recommend Person B as the host because you'll typically enjoy a more consistent and reduced latency experience.
If you're all within 500km of each other, then location isn't that important. The person with a stable and fast upload speed should handle the uploading. When our group was playing a game, I had a 100/100 Uni connection and was the one running the 8v8 servers. That was only for games that didn't require dedicated servers, and our group also had physical servers.
