Which system offers superior gaming performance?
I’m dealing with two computers. One is my primary setup, the other was my dad’s, lacking a graphics card. I’m wondering if his older system would handle gaming better if I installed both of my 970s GPUs there. My current setup has a Threadripper 1900X, 16GB RAM (though it only appears as 12GB), an ASRock X399 motherboard, a dual GTX 970s graphics card, a Seasonic 850W power supply, and an SSD. The second system runs a Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB RAM, a MSI B350 Tomahawk with a GTX 750, and a Corsair RM 650x with an SSD. I’m trying to decide which CPU would perform better in games. As an editor, I’d love to upgrade my Threadripper for dedicated editing, but I don’t want to risk losing performance.
The second option works better for - 1st and 2nd generation Threadripper models.
They’d likely deliver similar results, but the Threadripper 1900X would surpass the Ryzen 5. (Still, I’d pick the Ryzen 5)
The 2600 will perform better in gaming—just remember that many AM4 boards can't handle SLI. Still, it's not a big deal these days.
Consider rearranging the CPU according to AMD guidelines if certain RAM channels aren't functioning properly. When installing four 4GB RAM modules, ensure they follow a consistent slot arrangement on both sides of the CPU.
