which option offers superior performance for a high-end ASUS daisy chain motherboard? One kit with 4x8GB and another with 2x16GB but slower timings. I believed the first would be better, though some advised that 4x8GB might actually reduce performance.

If you desire 32GB, opt for a single kit that matches perfectly—don't attempt to merge two kits. The top performance will come from the one with CL15. 4000MHz are OC RAM, so verify compatibility between the motherboard and processor.

If you desire 32GB, opt for a single kit that matches and avoid mixing two kits; the CL15 model offers the best performance. The 4000MHz is OC RAM, so verify if your motherboard and CPU support that speed. Your RAM choice should come from tested MB QVL models. With OC RAM, you can't be sure of the actual frequency—it depends on manually entering SPD values in BIOS, with the final max frequency set by the chip's IMC strength. If you're unsure, provide your complete system specifications.

It should be Intel. AMD won't achieve those speeds with 4x sticks; slots #1 and #3 are secondary, and you'll only get decent performance from them.
For 32Gb either way, a 2x16Gb configuration is the best choice. You'd notice almost no difference—it's measured in nanoseconds, and even the fastest RAM programs won't show much variation at those speeds.
Choose the more affordable option that matches your desired look. More relaxed timings are better for memory controllers and reduce chances of OC or XMP problems.
