Which RAM option is better?
Which RAM option is better?
Hey everyone, I've been searching for a laptop for a few months now and found something that matches my budget and performance needs. I’m considering two RAM choices: one with 4GB DDR4 at 2400MHz and another with 16GB DDR4 at 2400MHz. The processor is an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U, and I know dual-channel RAM is better than single-channel for AMD. I’m trying to decide which setup works best for my situation. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks.
Looking for other choices? I’d trade a bit of GPU speed for more RAM, opting for the second option. Perhaps pick the first one and upgrade to an 8GB SSD. There’s an 8GB SSD available from Amazon UK for £24, and you could resell the 4GB version. This would give you 12GB of memory with dual-channel support.
In asymmetric configuration (flex mode), just half of the 8 GB drive operates in dual-channel mode.
Thank you for your message. I wasn't expecting to increase the RAM to 12GB, and I'm wondering if it would be significantly better than option 2 in your view. I'm a bit unsure about upgrading, though. Also, there isn't another choice for RAM—this is the specific model we're talking about.
You can obtain the laptop without Windows 10 by purchasing a used version on eBay for around ten dollars, and it works well with an SSD—just add your own HDD if you prefer a cheaper setup. Choose an 8GB or 16GB RAM stick, get a Windows 10 key, and everything should be fine.
That was the plan I was actually considering, hehe! Just to confirm, using just 16GB RAM is out of the question? I’m okay with 4GB/4GB right now and will switch to an 8 or 16GB RAM module later. (I’d rather not upgrade it until I have the laptop.)
Imo, 16GB isn't worth it. But I'd upgrade right away once you get it, since saving 20GBP could let you buy an 8GB stick. For me, 8GB isn't enough, but if you're not managing many tabs, it's not too bad.
Thanks for the assistance. I'm ready to finalize my choice and purchase it tomorrow. I was planning to start with a 1x16GB model, but now I see it's not the best option. I know you'll upgrade it once you receive it, but I don't want to deal with it for the first few months unless it becomes too bothersome! So I'll go with 2x4GB until I can no longer use it. Appreciate your help again!
