Most PCs used to have 3GB of RAM when they came out with Windows 32-bit. If your computer is running 64-bit Windows, adding more memory won't help much because it won't fit anyway. Sometimes the system might show up as having a few extra gigabytes, but that's just how things look. Make sure you have 64-bit Windows installed before buying anything else. There isn't really a good reason to change your BIOS unless something is broken or acting weird. In Europe, many big online stores sell RAM memory like Amazon and eBay do. But I think there aren't many places selling DDR2 anymore now. It's probably not worth paying 100 euros for one stick of that old style when you can buy a whole used laptop with four gigabytes of modern DDR3 memory. If you just need a big screen and decent speakers, maybe look at buying a cheap smart TV instead. You'll find lots of 17-inch laptops for a few hundred bucks that give way more performance than you'd expect.
Thanks a bunch, Eximo. I found a cheap 2GB DDR stick online here locally for $10 (including shipping) and it worked out great. Just waiting on it to ship. I'm planning on using 64-bit Linux OS, so I hope that the 4GB total of memory will show up.
