Which processor to pick: R5500 or I3 12100?
Hi everyone, I'm checking if a Ryzen 5 5500 would be a better pick compared to the Intel i3 12100. The i3 is newer with four cores, but benchmarks show similar performance. Both are getting complete builds for the same price, so I'm worried about making the right choice. My main goal is editing 4K videos (about 20 minutes) on a pr cc, and I plan to use proxies to avoid any lag in the workflow.
The 5500 lacks PCIe 4 support, which means for better performance you'd need an Intel-based GPU instead.
both options are outdated; consider a refurbished 3600(x) or 5600(x). Opt for a full build instead. Country-wise, this gives you a clear idea of what to expect with a mix of used and new items priced around $700. A 5600(x) with 32GB RAM and a 3080 would be a solid choice.
What is the overall budget for the system? If the focus is solely on video editing, we should examine the current market since many high-core-count chips are now significantly cheaper and would outperform these two options. Alternatively, if we stick with the 5500 model, its multicore capabilities are a major advantage. Its single core is a bit slower, but for editing tasks this isn't a concern here.
The 12100 offers more single-core performance compared to the 5500, which explains why they handle similar tasks well. However, Gamers Nexus found that the 5500 performs better in multithreaded scenarios. The i3-12100 is ideal for gaming only, while I concur with that view. Overall, the 5600/5600X provides a stronger CPU performance.
Remember that boards are more affordable, particularly the B450 and used B3/450 models. You can also offset the cache using a RAM OC, it doesn’t need to be at around 5000 for perfect 1:1 FCLK—4400 to 4600 is sufficient if you prefer avoiding high-frequency RAM OC issues.
I should opt for the 5600 instead of the I3. In Pakistan, prices vary widely, making it hard to plan a complete build. I’ll just choose the 5600.
The 12400/12400F behaves almost identically to the 5600, making the main factors its cost and availability of a compatible motherboard. AM4 typically offers many affordable boards, though 1700 models are less common.
