I found a very affordable ASUS Sabertooth X79 motherboard at a low price, which made me decide to buy it despite my lack of motivation for cheap tech. I’ve also noticed budget CPUs like the i7 4930K under £20, but options are limited and prices might rise. On the other hand, I’m interested in Xeon CPUs such as the E5 2670 v1 and E5 2689, which cost around £15 each. They seem promising for gaming, especially with 32GB RAM and a GTX 970 or 980 Ti. If I manage to get one under £200, I’d like to know if it works well for gaming.

Xeons aren't ideal for gaming. An i7 4930K offers a great price if you find it for under $50; it's still solid at $60-$70 and better than higher-end options. Anything above that isn't worth the investment.

It won't be a competition—expect 1080p or 1440p quality. You'll find typical titles like Cod and Fortnight, along with popular games such as Skyrim, Cyberpunk, and Minecraft. It's not too hard to play, except maybe for Cyberpunk.

I was immediately attracted to the i7 (stick to what you understand) but noticed in many scrapyard battles Linus leaned toward xeons, which made me reflect on what he was seeing. If I owned another x79 board, I’d purchase both just to satisfy my curiosity.

He chose xeons because of the cost. Before the 4930k dropped in price, it was just $200; now it’s almost $50.

Essentially it’s a worst-case situation for CPU demands. The older models require strong single-threaded speed, while Cyberpunk demands significant overall performance. Therefore, the i7 is the best choice—Xeon won’t be suitable in Fortnite and Minecraft unless you’re aiming for just 60fps.

Currently it’s £18 and I might switch to something else later.
