Which option provides the best performance in FPS? (Rainbow Six Siege)
Hi, I have an i5 7400 and a GTX 1050ti with overclocked RAM. I mainly play Rainbow Six Siege at around 80 FPS but often experience stuttering. To improve performance to 144hz and 144fps, I’m considering upgrading either my CPU to an i7 6700k or my GPU to a GTX 1660ti. I can only choose one option because of budget constraints. I’m unsure which would give the best results. Thanks!
When upgrading the CPU, it seems logical to also upgrade the motherboard, I believe it's better to focus on the GPU instead.
Start with the GPU but you'll definitely have to upgrade the CPU later
Really? You have an LGA1151 motherboard with your 7400 processor, right? You're pretty sure it works with the i7, but are you sure you don't need an upgrade?
The issue with these latest models is their high prices compared to their actual worth. You should consider getting a 1660 Ti now (or a 2060 for better value and solid performance at 144Hz) and then, when possible, upgrade your motherboard and processor to something more recent. The sole justification for choosing an 1151 i7 would be if you manage to secure a good deal—otherwise, a $150 price is the only worthwhile investment.
GTX 1660ti is a clear choice. Your i5 could cause performance issues in games, but simply adjusting some graphics settings will fix the problem without affecting visual quality. Just reduce certain settings to ease the bottleneck and boost FPS significantly. Make sure your cooler is adequate—just a better one than the stock model should work fine.
Lowering graphics settings won’t compromise image quality; it’s about optimizing performance. Don’t lower expectations for frame rates. You won’t reach 144 consistently, but you’ll surpass 100, especially in R6S, where the game is well optimized. In fact, you might easily hit 105-145 FPS with an i5-7400/GTX 1660ti. You likely won’t need to adjust many settings, though focus on the CPU-heavy ones.
For sustained high performance—above 115 FPS in most games—consider a CPU upgrade if you aim for 1080p or higher in R6S. If you stick to R6S and play mostly lighter titles, an i7 upgrade isn’t necessary for years when tackling more demanding games.
You can achieve 90-120 FPS in R6S with the 1050ti right now. Just skip the ultra settings and tweak the graphics that don’t impact your gameplay much. Experiment to find your ideal balance.
