Which option offers superior performance for gaming or multi-channel earbuds versus headphones?
I believe headphones, particularly open-back models, provide a broader soundstage which enhances positional audio perception. I can say that employing my AKG 712 Pro (open-back headphones) without virtual surround sound clearly demonstrates how far a sound appears to originate.
What you refer to by multi channel depends on the context—whether it's about multiple drivers or virtual surround sound. If it's about drivers, this applies only to headphones. For virtual surround, both systems typically use just two drivers. Once I have a better audio setup, I've stopped using virtual surround because stereo sounds much clearer than virtual surround.
Sorry for the unclear explanation, I've been away from this technology for a while. Thanks!

It mainly comes down to the use of headset systems, such as headphones with built-in microphones. The microphones in earbuds can sometimes be unreliable, picking up background noise like clothing movement, and overall quality is often limited by current technology. Additionally, it's becoming difficult to locate high-quality wired earbuds these days. Wireless options are problematic for gaming due to significant latency issues.
Nice wire earbuds, or at least some of the so-called IEMs, particularly balanced armature models, are relatively easy to locate. Most of these tend to be costly, with premium sets often priced significantly higher than standard gaming headsets. Typically, they lack a microphone as well. Multi-driver designs are also common, but rarely under $100. However, they generally offer limited soundstage, which comes from how sound interacts with the outer ear. Any positional audio effects would likely need to be handled by DSP, a feature many games already provide. They usually provide better isolation, are more comfortable for extended use, and tend not to get as hot in warm weather.
