Which one should we install? A new router or a second one?
I believe this is the correct place to ask this question. I have a router about 10 years old at this point. Should I upgrade it myself? It truly is fun and don’t have any problems but lacks range. I live in a house with tin roof and siding so as soon as you step. Outside, no wifi anymore. I then go on LTE which is fine but having wifi outside would be nice. I then have two shops, one connected the house and one about 30-40 ft away, both all surrounded in tin as well. If I upgraded my router, would it be possible for wifi to reach the 30-40ft away to the second shop? I immediately disconnect from wifi walking into the connected shop as the walls go house , corridor/walkway, shop with tin on both sides of the corridor/walkway. This one I could put a router in but would result in drilling holes in concrete or a floor Joint. But the only shop 30ish ft away. This is not any option. Also all three building have their own breaker box if that makes a difference. Another option would be to call my ISP to have them come out and upgrade my router but figured it would be easier for me to do it myself and cheaper. I don’t know exactly much about networking but do understand a little.
You mostly stay shielded from Wi-Fi signals, and upgrading the router won’t improve this.
You're essentially trapped inside a Faraday cage, right? While newer routers claim better speeds, they often sacrifice coverage. The best solution for full area reach is drilling holes—using PoE extenders or repeaters works well. Don't worry about varying power boards; the main issue would arise if you force connections with cables due to inconsistent voltage differences between buildings.
