These boards aren't great—they have poor VRMs. They won't work well with 8-core CPUs or even 6-core ones.

I'm currently using a Gigabyte B8 "Gaming" motherboard paired with a Kaby Lake i5. It's performed well. I was considering upgrading to a third-generation Ryzen but didn't want to spend too much on a new graphics card.

That's correct, Z390 is compatible with Intel CPUs while B450 is designed for AMD processors. Gigabyte offers solid Z390 and Z490 builds, but their B450 options are quite limited and not recommended.
