Set up a minimal build setup for OpenWrt. I relied on Debian previously but haven’t used Linux much now. You need a lightweight distro with all build tools, no GUI, and it should run on Windows via VMplayer.

Install Arch Linux without a graphical interface by default. On Ubuntu, you must remove or disable your X server and desktop environment to get a command-line experience.

I set up Debian without expecting a big download. The network ISO was just 291MB and the setup took only a few minutes. I added sudo and everything is working now.

Alternatively, you can deploy on an Ubuntu Server and bypass everything else.

Setting up Arch can be challenging. Antegros offers a GUI installer, while Manjaro provides a more complete setup with built-in tools and its own package manager. For C++ development, both options are helpful since they offer continuous updates and a wide selection of libraries.

I agree. Arch is fine, but not a newbie distro at all. Manjaro and Antergos are a bit easier for some to get into if they want Arch,

Many folks advised me against using Arch when I was just starting with Linux. But I actually gained a solid understanding of how the system functions through installation, usage, and upkeep. It's my primary desktop now, powering two mining rigs. I'm a big supporter and each time I use it, I discover something new about what happens behind the scenes. I believe it's suitable for beginners as long as you're committed to investing time and doing your research. The Arch Wiki is also excellent for other distributions.

They suggested avoiding arch for security reasons, as it could lead to build issues. I’m not sure if that’s what I understood from what I read.

Magie gas is an alternative without a graphical interface, and Funtoo is always available too.
