The 7800xt isn't just a $50 increase in what people keep saying—it's not. The most affordable option is a sapphire pulse card priced at $469.99, including shipping and taxes, which would bring the total near $499. The 7700xt and RX 6800 offer the cheapest deals, with XFX cards at $389.99 and $399.99 respectively, both with free shipping, costing about $413 to $420. At the minimum, it's around $80 more expensive.

In the long run, the 7800xt appears to be a better investment, though most benchmarks I've reviewed show its performance rising to 1440p from the 7700xt and the RX 6800 reaching 10-20 frames. The only game that outperformed this was Warzone. The RX 6800 seems to offer the best value overall, but because it's an older model, its performance may decline over time compared to the 7700xt, which showed slightly better results at 1440p in certain UE5 titles, though the gap between 3 and 5 frames is minimal.

For the RX 6800, I'd need to replace my hard drive cage with stackable ones for my two drives and upgrade to a power supply capable of handling its power demands. This might be necessary for both the RX 6800 and possibly the 7700xt, though I'm not entirely confident about that. My current 650w PSU should likely suffice for the 7700xt, but I'm unsure.

Regarding VR performance, I'm uncertain. All the benchmarks I've seen for the 7000 series were from a year ago, and they mostly mentioned driver issues rather than hardware limitations. There haven't been any recent benchmarks for the 6000 series. I also can't rely on AV1 due to my Quest 2 and the lack of plans to upgrade soon unless major improvements come out.

Even though I wasn’t doing it, considering your schedule and what you need the upgrade to last, you might want to hold off. There’s a rumor that AMD will reveal a new set of cards at CES 2025, likely between January 7 and 10.

I don’t usually wait, but I’m planning to sell my 6800xt since it gives me a significant discount.

If you can afford it, I’d recommend the 7800xt because it’s newer than the RX 6800 and performs better than both other cards. My RX 6800 xt offers similar performance to the RX 7800 xt and is a solid 1440p card.

Since you intend to keep the card longer, it makes sense not to start with something lower than what you need if you have the funds.

I would choose the 7800xt if a PSU upgrade was within my budget. There have been many differing opinions suggesting that my current PSU wouldn’t handle the power requirements, though they likely referred to the quality of the power supply I already own as poor.

The model I’m using is:
https://www.newegg.com/p/1HU-00J7-00D15

Many others have advised me that my PSU could manage the load, but they suggest upgrading it later. Honestly, if I weren’t worried about damaging my components, I’d just install it and ignore the warnings. With the $400 cards, I can afford both the card and the PSU, though I’m still unsure if risking performance damage is worth it since some people say it’s fine and just undervolt it.

If I can’t get the 7800xt, I’ll likely opt for the RX 6800 instead.

If it supports the budget and you’re okay with refurbished parts, this could be worth checking out.
https://www.newegg.com/powercolor-r...gb...DFRKCF6363
From what I recall, the 7800xt’s secrets were more similar to the RX 6800 than the 6800xt. I’d have to verify again, but it seems the 6800xt offers better stream processing capabilities compared to the 7800xt.
As shown in the benchmarks, their performance is quite comparable.

You might want to think about the 6800xt since it could help you stretch your budget a bit for a PSU upgrade.

I usually don’t purchase used cards, but if it had been sold and shipped by newegg I’d consider it. The seller, however, has many bad reviews. I’m not too confident about third-party sellers. Thanks for giving it a shot. I haven’t found a 6800xt at a fair price anywhere. :

I understand. In my area there was only one 6800xt left at the local Microcenter store. I've bought used GPUs through eBay before without issues, but recently new ones have arrived. Particularly the 7900 xtx. It's expensive to risk on a used card.

I just placed an order for a 7800 XT with 16GB VRAM from Amazon at $489. I’m frustrated with the high prices from Nvidia and want to upgrade my setup. I plan to install it in an HP Omen 30L paired with an i9 10850K and 32GB of 3200Mhz RAM. It’s meant to replace the RTX 3080, which performs well in 4K and maintains around 60FPS at high settings. I’m hoping the 7800 XT can push the performance even further and help achieve a stable 60FPS.

It might be worth stopping the order. I believe AMD has new cards coming in on March 6. Also, the only advantage with the 7800xt is the additional VRAM. I don't think its performance will be significantly better compared to the 3080 unless you're playing games that consume a lot of memory.
