What kind of purchases do you make, physical or digital versions? Also, if a game includes a Steam code and you enter it, does that eliminate the need for a CD and allow downloading from another device using your account?

It seems you're asking about the context of using discs in modern gaming. What exactly are you referring to?

If they had made physical copies of the games I played, I would buy them just to have.

It wasn't that different before. My copy of Portal 2 installs Steam and some of the game from the disc, then just downloads most of it because it's linked to your account now—something like 2013 that I got.
The only games truly based on discs are for consoles, and even then, many have day-one install downloads that make a disc option even better.

Physical versions either contain just a license code with no disc or a disc with very little install data, yet still need the license code entered into the platform to download the complete game.

Physical is pointless, purchase digital unless it's a collector's version.

Starting in July, this release was included in a physical collectors edition. I hadn't used the disk before, so I didn't know what was inside. It might have been the installer, but since it's an MMO, there were plenty of updates available to download. There was a code I had to enter on my account to activate it, and it automatically downloaded updates as needed.

Began with Half-Life 2. Noted the Steam-DVD bundle was still in use as late as 2013.
