Which CPU to pick for MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus? (2700X vs 5600X)
Assembling a PC for a friend as a gift since he hasn’t owned one in years came from getting an X570 when I was intoxicated at a party two days ago. (I don’t know how you manage to source cheap PC components while drunk… I even don’t get it either… 110$ just for the board, haha). It’s never been opened, and I’m not sure what BIOS version is installed. Still hoping it can run 5000-series processors. Out of the box it supports 2000 and 3000 series chips. Should I assume after an update it will support 5000 series? Looking at current models like 2700x or 5600x, even if the 5600x is a bit more expensive when used secondhand, it’s still around 110$ more. Which would be the ideal choice for this build? I might consider adding a 1070 or a 2060 later if I can find one under 250$. (This is definitely Norway territory.) Edit: The main purpose will be gaming—90% of the time—and work tasks—10%—light usage for gaming. Not overly demanding games either. I already have my eye on a 3600X or 3700X, but if possible, I’d prefer a 5000-series if it fits the budget. Edited May 20, 2022 by MultiGamerClub
You might modify the board yourself or explain your reason to the shop staff, then look up the manufacturer’s site to find the BIOS version that works with Ryzen 5000 chips. According to their page, version 7C37vAG is listed at the link provided. It’s wise to upgrade to a newer release for a seamless upgrade, since the 5000 series remains popular and current prices aren’t very attractive.
The board supports bios flashback, allowing updates without a CPU. For gaming purposes, I recommend 5600/X.
Looks like folks are offering them for a low price on the used marketplace in Norway. The numbers seem wild compared to what I’m used to, especially with processors like 5900X and 12900K. It’s interesting that some people don’t even try that. No wonder I didn’t see it listed on the site or box. Good to know now—I won’t need another CPU just to start up or update. Hopefully I can find a cheaper option so I don’t have to force an update. Just checked if I can get something around 2700X cheaper, which would make installing the new motherboard easier. This case is from 2008, but I’m hoping it’s still sturdy enough to drill holes if needed.
ATX became a uniform design in 1995 with the second version of the standard in 2004. For most typical setups, unless you have an unusual OEM case or the X570 is EATX (which some prefer due to its width), it should work well.
The Ryzen 7 3700X is priced similarly to the 5600X and 5600, offering comparable value for performance. You might also look at other options in this range.
