I've been preparing for a while and can finally afford a solid build. I'm torn between the Ryzen 3 3300X and the Ryzen 5 1600 AF. Each has its strengths, so I need a fresh perspective on this decision. My setup will include gaming titles like GTA V, DOOM, and some newer AAA games if possible, plus Blender and After Effects. It needs to perform well across tasks. Most comparisons focus only on gaming benchmarks and skip the productivity aspect, which is important to me. I’ll be using it with a GTX 1060 3GB now. Many people say the 3300X is only suitable for now, while others think the 1600AF is better for the future. Is that really the case? I wouldn’t want to buy something slower just in case it improves, but it shouldn’t be this risky.
The 3300x should handle similar workloads besides games, and it will definitely outperform them. However, for purely multi-threaded tasks, it won’t stand a chance. It depends on the specifics. Games could run smoothly on more than four cores, possibly extending the 1600 frame rate. We still don’t have the full picture.
Typically the 3300X performs slightly better in gaming, while the 1600AF suits productivity tasks more. A key factor is the motherboard—3300X needs a current BIOS (B550 or MAX), and the 1600AF cannot run on B550.
Since the 3300X isn't available in most places, choosing to build now is the best option.
What should we do now? The answer varies. Not every workload that runs through MT is identical. Certain tasks use both CPUs equally. (Leaving out gaming.)
