Avoid paying too much for intel. You might already have the motherboard. A 3700x and board could cost less than an i9.

Why? It's pretty much the best gaming CPU, is there a reason to trade it out? They said they already have the 9900KS shipped, and it slaps a 3700X in games so no reason to send it back.

Someone mentioned the i9-9900ks performs better in games compared to the 3700x. I believed Ryzen eventually surpassed it.

Value versus performance tends to match. Strong performance beyond gaming is generally true, yes and no—it hinges on your workload. Ryzen excels in many areas, though some Intel models maintain an edge. In gaming, Intel still edges out because of tighter core-to-core delays and ringbus architecture, especially when optimized. Mesh chips like the X299 (without ringbus) can still deliver good results if tuned properly, but they’re not as competitive as most Ryzen options. They’re a bit more expensive than mainstream Intel, but still cheaper than high-end alternatives, making them a solid choice if you specifically need gaming performance.
