Which cooler is best for overclocking an i7 920?
Hello,
I’m thinking about purchasing an R9 390 but worried that my current CPU (stock i7 920 @ 2.67GHz) might limit its performance. To push it further, I’d likely need an aftermarket cooler, though my budget is around $50. I’m unsure which cooler would be best and how much efficiency or cost I should expect. Could you help decide what to choose?
Also, as someone new to CPU overclocking, what level of overclocking do you think I’d need for the i7 920 to let the R9 390 reach its full potential?
And what’s the simplest method for overclocking a CPU?
Thanks!
The Cooler Master Hyper 212 typically costs about $30 and offers great value for the money.
For overclocking purposes, it's advisable to review some guides and look for relevant information and experiences.

I purchased the MSi R9 390 and my i7 920 was really limiting performance in GTA V and other titles. I’ve adjusted my i7 920 to run at 3.6 ghz with C0/C1, 1.275v and x20 multiplier using the stock cooler. Now I’m aiming for around 4ghz and wondering if a 212 Evo will handle it well. If the CPU stays near 70-75°C on Prime95, it should work fine. Would you think the Hyper 212 Evo could achieve those temperatures at that speed? If not, what cooler would be better within a 60 CAD budget?
