I operate for AVG but remain neutral, so I’ll stay factual and impartial. Regardless of opinions, paid antivirus software often outperforms alternatives like Kaspersky, Eset, or Trend Micro. For individuals who prefer a more relaxed approach, free options suffice. Avast is free—www.avast.com. It performs adequately, though it lacks zero-day protection beyond its advanced virtualization feature (which requires BIOS activation). This helps it virtualize suspicious programs, but it’s CPU-intensive and noticeably slows the system. AVG is also solid—www.free.avg.com. It offers a strong behavior blocker and better signature detection than Avast, runs lighter on the processor, though it can delay startup and uses around 50MB of RAM. These are the tools I suggest based on performance and needs.

I personally rely on MS Security Essential (though honestly I don’t really care much, I mainly work with Mac). Bitdefender offers comprehensive protection for those who aren’t tech-savvy and install software from the internet, just like my sister does.

I rely on Malwarebytes. The top protection comes from simple understanding.

I believe we really need some improvement here, or we should look into software options. This question seems to come up often. On the other hand: for free antivirus solutions, you’d likely want Avira or Bitdefender. Bitdefender is lighter on resources but offers fewer customization choices. If you’re going for a paid product, consider Bitdefender or Kaspersky. I’d probably choose Kaspersky because their team has uncovered many security vulnerabilities in the past. You might also explore AVTEST, an independent company that rates antivirus programs (Bitdefender and Kaspersky are the leading two).

I used Bitdefender for two years, but its dependability became an issue by the end. The updates would frequently go offline, requiring a complete reinstall to function properly.

That seems unusual...it's been functioning well for me since I changed around 1.5 years ago.
