Have you checked the bit version of Ubuntu? It might help to confirm if it's 32 or 64 bits.

The last 32-bit release used 16.04 LTS. Fedora currently supports a 32-bit edition.

You require a 32bit Linux distribution because some older systems lack support for 64bit features. Alternatively, there may be other reasons. You should check several previous versions of many distributions to find a 32bit option.

When you have more than 1.5-2 gigabytes of RAM, skip the 32-bit option and opt for the 64-bit version. Choose a lighter distribution instead of Ubuntu.

In any scenario, the 17.1 release of Linux Mint 32-bit is available. You may also set up the 32-bit Arch, though I wouldn't suggest it unless you're comfortable with the command line.

Later updates are also supported. Linux Mint 19.1 comes in a 32-bit edition for Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce. I just installed the 32-bit Cinnamon version inside a VM, and a brief check shows it runs on Ubuntu Bionic (18.04). It's unclear how they obtained that release, as it isn't available directly on Ubuntu's official site. https://linuxmint.com/download.php LMDE3 is also offered in 32-bit form.
