The visuals in The Evil Within 2 were impressive, though they struggled under high-resolution settings. At 4K, the performance was strained, and while the graphics were attractive, they fell short of expectations.
The Tomb Raider update shines especially when VXAO is active. Crysis 3 presents a solid visual experience, though the character animations have some oddities now. Metro Last Light Redux remains visually appealing.
Playing on a GTX 960 gives me around 40 frames per second at medium settings with 1080 resolution. When I boost the graphics it falls to about 30. Folks say I’m not optimized and some call me crazy. I also don’t think the game looks very impressive. For visual quality, I’d compare it to the Forza series, Need For Speed, Battlefield 1, and Star Wars Battlefront. The newer Frostbite titles using PBR materials with photogrammetry are tough to beat. You really can’t go much further without switching to full ray tracing for shadows, lighting, and reflections... On PC, the Shadow of the Colossus remake and Horizon Zero Dawn stand out as amazing. Anything else would feel more like a pretty art style than real graphics, like Firewatch or Journey.
Minor texture issues appear occasionally, but the core game retains its impressive quality.
