When should GPU utilization be high?
Ryzen 5 5600g with 16gb 3600mhz cl18 and Asus rtx 3060 oc paired with Samsung 980 500gb. In Valorant I experience 40-50% CPU usage and GPU performance is lower than expected. A video comparison is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-rjvCXI...FudA%3D%3D. This setup seems to indicate a GPU bottleneck, though undervolting suggestions have been considered but not successful in the pbo2 app.
I'm unable to provide an answer to your question, but it's important to note that a GPU relies entirely on the CPU for operation, especially on AMD systems. For instance, with 3600 MHz RAM, the performance depends on whether the XMP profile is activated. Whether XMP is enabled significantly impacts how effectively the CPU supplies power to the GPU. Ensure XMP is functioning properly.
Some games, like Star Citizen, heavily depend on a fast CPU to adequately feed the GPU. If your CPU isn't sufficiently responsive, the GPU's performance will be limited even if the hardware itself appears fine. It might be worth adjusting certain settings, though I can't advise further without more details.
EDIT: I should also mention that keeping the BIOS updated can sometimes help, but it usually isn't a major solution unless your system is quite outdated relative to the BIOS version.
As @LinuxDevice recommended, consider the simple solutions. What adjustments are you making in the game settings? If you lower everything to low, does your FPS improve? Are all system drivers current, including the chipset? Are you using the Ryzen power plan? Try DLDSR and set the resolution to 1440p. Does the GPU reach 100% then?
Hi! Just a quick note—thanks for the update. I'm using 1080p and haven't heard much about Ryzen Power Plan yet. I'll check it out and, following your advice, I tried gaming in 4k upscaling but the GPU reached 80%.
Hey!
I've used xmp and even run at 3800mhz before. Valorant is a CPU-heavy game, so it uses more CPU power, but the video I shared suggested the GPU should handle more, which would boost FPS.
I don't have a definitive answer for that. What I can say is that every game, even those relying more on one part than another, have numerous situations where the usual assumptions don't hold. Something important to note is likely that as the CPU increases, the GPU might also rise due to higher data demands. However, this isn't always true—like when your character remains still and data stays constant, the workload for both CPU and GPU changes, so updates don’t occur as much. What I can recommend is that if XMP is activated, you’ve covered a significant area.
