When I power on XMP, the PC starts but doesn't begin functioning properly.
I’m unable to activate XMP through the on-board switch, BIOS, or software. After enabling XMP and booting up my PC, it powers on normally but nothing appears on the screen. I have to restart it several times for it to come back, yet upon doing so it prompts me to reset everything to the default settings. In the BIOS, the DDR4 is set to 2133 MHz even though it should be 3400MHz.
Hello, begin by upgrading your BIOS to the latest version, after which reset the CMOS and apply Optimized Defaults. If this doesn't fix the problem, proceed with XMP using only two RAM modules installed in slots 1,3 or 2,4 based on your motherboard.

Delarox shared his experience, chenuki suggested first updating the BIOS, then resetting CMOS and applying Optimized Defaults. If that didn’t work, he tried XMP with only two RAM modules in slots 1,3 or 2,4 based on his motherboard. Hope this assists. No that didn’t help either. My BIOS is updated, I checked ASUS. I removed the battery to reset CMOS and it seemed to work because my time and date were off. Then I loaded the optimal default and changed XMP to Profile #1 (3401MHz), saved and exited, but the PC still froze on a black screen. Thank you for trying the CMOS reset first. Check the two RAM lists on this support page for your part number to see if XMP is compatible with 4 DIMMs. Some only support 2 DIMMs: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z17...pDesk_QVL/. If supported, you might manually adjust the RAM timings near the XMP profile to get a boot.

Thank you for trying the CMOS reset. Please check the two RAM lists on the support page to confirm your RAM part number and see if XMP is compatible with four DIMMs. Some models only support two DIMMs: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z17...pDesk_QVL/
If supported for four DIMMs, you might manually adjust the RAM timings near the XMP profile to achieve a successful boot.
The board only supports two DIMMs with specific timings (16-18-18-38). You can test slots 1, 3 or 2, 4 using two DIMMs and see if it works. Alternatively, you can set the timings to those values or start with looser settings and progress. Many guides exist on this topic.
Hope this assists.
