I transported a system in a suitcase and returned it from the states once, probably a 486dx2. Likely it was model 93 or 94. Probably not a good idea now.
I've always managed to pack my suitcases with unusual computer equipment and woodworking tools without any issues. As long as you're not bringing guns, explosives, flammable substances, or lithium batteries that aren't inside the devices themselves, most airlines don't seem too concerned. I simply review the airline's prohibited items list before I start packing.
It's acceptable to send laptops with internal lithium batteries in checked luggage on many flights. I've done this several times. Motherboards, GPUs, and similar components usually only need a quick inspection, since they go through advanced security scanners. A desktop PC is unlikely to cause any problems during flight.
Battery packs should be kept in carry-on luggage within a set limit—generally 4 to 6 batteries under 100 watt hours each. It can be amusing when transporting large professional drones, but there are ways to manage the limits.
I wouldn't anticipate any security issues with a desktop PC placed in a sturdy cardboard box and stored in the aircraft hold. Just remember to unplug GPUs or heavy air cooler heatsinks and store them separately. I've seen unusual items being sent through baggage conveyor systems after landing.
You might be able to ship the whole computer for under $200 if its total weight stays between 20 to 23kg, as long as you check the excess baggage fees. I'd still prefer to leave out the monitor before traveling.
I have a few 386 and 486 CPUs stored in protective ESD boxes. I don't know why I keep them.
I would bring the graphics card, RAM, and cooler along as carry-on luggage. Discard the outdated PSU, purchase a superior one in the UK. Send the assembled PC components elsewhere, as it should be quite light after removal. Dispose of the monitors and acquire a fresh one locally. Upon arrival in the UK, reassemble the PC with a new monitor and PSU. It’s strongly advised against using such an outdated PSU with modern graphics due to the significant transient load spikes. Old PSUs are far beyond their optimal condition. Generally, I’d limit PSU usage to no more than 10 years unless it comes with a warranty exceeding that period. The current system is sufficient for playing newer titles occasionally.
Here are some suggestions for a new monitor and PSU. You might also consider opting for less expensive panel types like IPS, VA, or TN.

Yeah. I haven't ever taken any computer courses on a plane, I think. I remember some of the older machines or builds well. My first 900Mhz AMD system got me into PCs at home and it worked great for gaming back then. Since then I've mostly used Intel, but if you had to pick again and didn't have a budget, I'd be happy to try AMD once more.
Thanks Misgar. I agree. I might end up putting a few things in a case packed with clothes. As for laptops, although I like the idea of having a laptop for on the go, I probably won't be on the go much, and unless it was my first Macbook or something, I'd probably always be looking at how the other half live with their Macbook battery life. I'm not a Starbucks type dude, but with a laptop, I'd probably feel that it wasn't particularly powerful. Having said that, plugging one into a large monitor at home would offer the full PC experience which is what I'm into.
I speak as someone who has never owned a new or decent laptop or indeed really needed one (compared to always having a PC at home).
