Hi Guys,
I’m planning to return to the UK to live with and assist my dad. I’m 57 years old and will have to start fresh with a new computer and a limited budget. My short-term priorities are to conduct video calls using Teams and manage WordPress, Affinity, and other tasks during my free time.
I generally replace my PC every 7 or 8 years, so I’m familiar with building systems from scratch. At the moment, I’m on a tight budget, which means I’ll need to be careful with costs. I enjoy gaming occasionally—like Apex Legends—but that might have to wait for a while. I haven’t used a Mac before, though it seems appealing depending on future needs.
What should I focus on first?
- A laptop?
- A Mac Mini? (I’ve seen the Mini mentioned here a few times.)
- Or a gradual upgrade path?
Feel free to suggest components or specific products. Right now I’m running an older setup (Z390 Aorus Master, 19-9900K, RTX 3080, etc.). I might sell it before moving, if possible. I’m unsure about the shipping costs overseas and wonder if it’s worth it.
If I can afford it, I’d like to bring my keyboard (G913 TKL) and microphone (Blue Yeti), plus a mouse. I’m not sure if they fit in suitcases.
If this was just for personal upgrades without relocation, maybe a simpler upgrade like the 7800 X3D would help with gaming performance.
Starting from scratch, what would you recommend? If you’re in the UK, any current price info or good stores would be appreciated.
I won’t be traveling—I’ll stay mostly at home.

Thanks for your reply, Lutfij. I'm in Japan. (Twenty years ago, my ex sent an old PC from the States to Japan. It took a while.) I'm unsure about shipping prices and will have to check. When you watch baggage handling videos on YouTube, I really hope shipping companies are more careful. It would be exciting to see it arrive at my dad's place, though. I think adding a couple of monitors wouldn't significantly increase the cost. I'll do some searches for shipping. Thank you.
I think you can sell everything in your build and retain the RTX 3080.

It seems the decision hinges on shipping expenses. The 3080 works well for gaming, but I’ll have to take time setting up a system within the first few weeks after moving back. Thanks.
When considering shipping, you may wish to eliminate the gpu and wrap it separately or place it in a different compartment if it remains in the slot. This prevents any harm to the slot during transport as the tower moves.
Yes, I noticed that in another discussion. I think I'll remove the GPU and the CPU cooler. Thanks a lot. I suspect the shipping cost will be high.
If you're looking for something downbeat, check the price of your current memory. Then examine what a 32gb kit of DDR5 would cost in your new system.
I think even with high shipping costs, it might still be worth it. I really hope my machine lasts longer. The memory problem doesn't seem to improve soon.
Another option is to save the RAM and GPU, maybe using SSD drives and creating a budget Intel DDR4 PC once you arrive, then reuse the RAM and 3080. This would allow you to reach a 12th-14th generation Intel CPU. Other parts might be easier to obtain.
Yes. I feared as much. I like the idea of keeping it all because it's my PC/comfort zone obviously. Maybe there is a computer shipping company or department, I'm not sure. Many years ago, I shipped a kind of drinks tray that resembled a 3D dog, that sits by the side of a couch. It was hollow inside. (My mum loved dogs at the time.) By the time it got to the UK from the States, my Dad said it was just a loose bag of broken pieces. I packed that myself with tons of bubble wrap and cardboard. As for the PC, I guess nothing ventured nothing gained. Cheers. If you or anyone is in the UK, what's the best online store for judging prices? I still use Newegg in the States just for ideas. (Unfortunately, Japan has always been expensive.)
Thanks. That's a sensible option. Part of me wants to consider AMD. Just the idea of saving power, energy, bills, is attractive to me at this point. I noticed no one suggested a laptop or some other route. I suppose it's good to focus on some type of investment/build path. Thanks. Without having looked yet, I'm guessing there are still some savings to be made from previous gen stuff, right? Hopefully, the 7800 X3D is a little cheaper for not being the latest, for example. I used to follow this stuff more, especially 10 or 15 years ago.
