The list size doesn't matter—it's just one stick of RAM. This is really bad for performance because it halves your memory bandwidth, making you need two sticks to use dual-channel. DDR5 offers a temporary fix by running a single stick in virtual dual-channel, but it's not a perfect solution. Avoid using just one stick; you'll experience significant slowdowns and stuttering in games because of insufficient memory bandwidth.
Is this your current setup? The upgrade seems justified. A 5500 offers solid performance, but moving to AM5 would likely hurt RAM speed. Your AM4 is okay for now, especially with good airflow, and it should handle a 5700X3D at baseline. It’ll outperform both the 7500F and 12400 easily. I’d go for a 5700X3D paired with a quality cooler like Thermalright—no need to settle for a half-built AM5 build.
I've always considered ending my AM4 with a 5800X3D or something similar, but it requires quite a lot of L3 cache when I have the monster 6800 with 16GB (bought used for 2800 SEK!). Still, it's worth selling all these together used because I get more value than just for the 5 5500 alone.
I’d pick the 5700x3d because it’s more affordable and still very close to the 5800x3d. The 3D vcache really boosts performance in games. Both the 5800x3d and 5700x3d are top-tier CPUs that can match today’s deals. Depending on your budget, it makes sense to go with the cheaper option, especially if you’re not planning to upgrade RAM right now.
I’m considering giving 5700X3D a try and will keep looking for that budget RAM. I’ll check the same platform I use in Sweden, as it seems likely to appear soon. My brother just moved to the US, and a Microcenter is opening nearby, which might mean I can find the 5600X3D there if they still have some left.
It seems this could be the last AM4 version before the shift to AM5. Appreciate the helpful feedback: https://se.pcpartpicker.com/list/fNKCXk
It's just one stick. Your results will decline. You're probably going to drop below the 5500 you've achieved in similar matches. Plus, the game flow will become much less smooth because you only have one stick.
