What's the mystery behind the new Ryzen 5700X?
Hello,
I recently purchased a Ryzen 5700X to swap in for the 5600 model in an AM4 ECC RAM UnRaid configuration, sourced from Aliexpress. The seller is reputable, with numerous reviews, and the product listing clearly marks the item as certified. The packaging was standard, featuring the usual seal from the manufacturer.
During installation, I paired it with a brand new Thermalright Peerless Assassin Mini (acquired from a trusted retailer) and applied Noctua NT-H2 paste. I later discovered that the cooler wasn’t a perfect match for my case, so I removed and cleaned both components using soft microfiber and Arctic Silver ArctiClean. After cleaning, I observed that the CPU and cooler bore similar marks—round impressions on the R (Riblet) side and smaller dots along the edges. These marks were consistent across images, suggesting a possible alignment or pressure issue rather than physical damage.
I made it a point to inspect the PA Mini right after unboxing, but I wasn’t sure if any changes were visible on the CPU itself.
Questions for you:
- Are these marks normal, or could they indicate a problem with the CPU IHS transferring to the cooler?
- Have others experienced similar issues?
- Should I consider returning the CPU if it’s the cause, while the return period is still open—rather than worrying about potential damage during installation?
Additional notes:
I tightened the AM4 cooler spring screws until they resisted turning, suspecting the marks came from sliding or improper tightening. The Noctua NT-H2 paste was brand new and applied before installation.
Best regards,
Dents on an IHS are quite frequent in used processors that have been treated roughly. The indentation creates a raised area similar to the rim of a crater. You should notice them when pressing a fingernail against the surface. Because the IHS is significantly harder than the soft aluminum or copper of a heatsink, any protrusions will dent the cooler during installation.
Thanks for the response. I'm sure I'm due a free refund, so I'll go ahead and do it.
I just bought a more costly SFF cooler I was thinking of using with it, and I won't sign up for any indents if I can avoid it.
*Edit* I ended up getting a 5900XT from a nearby shop. 16 cores / 32 threads, exactly what I needed.
