What's the best CPU under £500 for programming and SolidWorks? Should it be AMD or Intel?
Hi everyone,
I’m seeking guidance on selecting a CPU under £500 for my needs: programming and CAD (especially SolidWorks).
I’d also like to clarify the decision factors. Could you outline the key CPU specifications or traits to focus on for each task?
If possible, I’d appreciate understanding why AMD might be preferred over Intel and vice versa.
Thanks for your help!

We utilize Siemens NX 24, Solidworks 2025 SP1.2, and Fusion 360 in our work. Although I haven’t conducted any tests on Solidworks, I performed some trials with Fusion last year using an i7-8700, Ryzen 7 7700X, 7950X, and a 14700K. From my observations, the 14700K was able to render tool paths more efficiently compared to the other CPUs. We also have a CAD specialist who performs simulations in SolidWorks, but I haven’t tested the 14700K against any other processors. All our CAD professionals follow this setup: an Asus Z790-A motherboard, an i7-14700K CPU, 64GB of 6400MT/s CL32 RAM, and a PNY Quadro RTX A4500 GPU.
