Do you already have coax? A wired setup is the top choice. Wanting to get the final foot wired feels just like carrying a firehose with a garden hose behind it. That connection is as slow as the weakest part in the line.

Next month I'm going to get fiber at my house. Do I need Cat 6A cables on the upper floor, or do I need more stuff installed? Thanks a lot!

Cat6a handles much faster speeds than Cat5e, which only works well at 1 gigabit per second.

How much does this project typically cost? I think it could end up being pretty expensive, particularly if the router isn't sitting right under the ceiling of the space you want it installed.

So that's why I told you to call a low-voltage guy near you. No one can tell you how much work it will take unless they actually visit the place and look at everything themselves.

Instead, you can try these options in order from strongest to weakest: ethernet MOCA (which uses your existing coax lines), powerline (uses the house's electrical wires), and then finally WiFi. This should be the last thing you consider because it's only needed if nothing else works.
