What's going wrong with my gigabit connection?
Hey everyone, I got a motherboard with an H61 chip (which means it should handle speeds up to 1000). But my computer only works at 100 Mbps. I tried buying a Cat 7 cable, but that didn't help either. Even when I plugged in a USB cable that supports all those speeds and connected the router to something else, everything worked fine on the other side. The router settings are set to limit speed to 100 Mbps, so the gigabit option isn't even showing up. After updating Windows and fixing Realtek drivers for my Ethernet controller, the problem is still there.
Welcome to the forums! New here? I have an H61 motherboard from an ASRock brand. They make many of these chips for their systems. Do you own one like that? Asking about your current BIOS version right now is important too, and asking what operating system (OS) you're running helps me understand better. I bought a Cat 7 Ethernet cable just to replace the same old problem. You don't need that fancy stuff; standard Cat5 cables are more than enough for everything else.
You want to turn off the internet feature on your router? I guess you probably mean set it to 100mbps, but even if you try setting it to 1000mbps, the router still thinks it's in "auto" mode and might drop back down to just 100mbps. Do you have a link to the cat7 cable you bought? A huge lot of ethernet cable being sold online is fake. You only need a cat5e wire that is pure copper and has the right thickness (22-24 mm, no flat or thin ones). If you search for cables on Amazon, most of them are just that bad fake flat stuff.
It probably still worked even if there was a problem with the board and we tried using USB instead of something else.
FE (Fast Ethernet) stands for 100 Mbps. What is your motherboard model? Fast Ethernet can go up to 100 Mbps, but you said that your motherboard goes up to 1000 Mbps. You might be installing the wrong driver or maybe your motherboard only supports 100 Mbps.
