What's going on with DOOM Open Beta? It's really surprising.
I shared this about the Doom beta since we already noticed odd behavior in Dark Souls 3, which is a full game. I tested the latest Nvidia 364.96 hotfix and compared it with the 314.22 driver from 2013 in Dark Souls 3. The game runs on a Fermi GTS 450 with identical settings at 1360x768p using the latest hotfix driver. Here’s the gameplay link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKk63TajS6M. For the 314.22 driver from 2013, you can watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hImoox6qyzo. With the older driver, I achieved 10-15 more average FPS and higher max FPS. What’s going on with NVIDIA? Why are they lowering performance in the newest driver again? Fermi users, this is important. We’ve seen similar issues with GTX 400 and 500 users on Reddit, and many on Steam have confirmed it. NVIDIA hasn’t released an official statement yet.
They shift attention away from older cards as they become outdated. Certain adjustments meant to boost new cards can actually hurt the older ones. In reality, the older drivers are more finely tuned for the earlier cards. You shouldn't expect them to give up the speed of newer cards just to keep up with a card that's six years old. That argument makes sense if you were discussing a recent 900 series model, but here we're referring to a card that's six years old. These changes aren't aimed at lowering the performance of older cards. The updates for the present series don’t automatically benefit the older ones, and there’s no incentive for Nvidia to invest in improving past cards. The 2013 driver you mentioned is nearing the end of the 400 series and will likely outperform the one released six years prior.
this video covers nvidea's technology and its impact on older cards, especially for AMD users.
Gameworks was built to weaken AMD and older nvidia cards. These changes are causing games to become much harder to run in the future, which helps them earn more over time. Nvidia seems to be playing greedy with these tactics—probably trying to control programming and optimization. I recall some games that had really demanding PhysX, but in Alice Madness Returns it runs smoothly even on high settings, and the graphics look great. Regarding drivers, nvidia is intentionally phasing out older cards, which reduces performance but achieves the same goal. Keep buying the latest cards every year!
