what weird motherboards you know of?
https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/P4 Combo/ this is one of the strangest board i know and saw irl. a board with both 478 and 775 socket in the end of p4 era. a rare 848 chipset, basically same spec as low end 845 but with higher fsb.
Back then, AsRock was known for creating quirky boards like this one. I owned an AsRock Dual SATA 2 socket with a riser card that could upgrade to AM2 and DDR2 memory. I haven’t seen anything like it in a while. Have you got it?
My usual preference for mustaches gives me a sense of unease. I’ll update the profile picture for you.
LM is the Lapped Morgan silver dollar cold plate model. After that, someone released a Liquid Metal version.
The EVGA SR2 is definitely worth discussing here. It’s an LGA 1356 motherboard featuring two CPU slots, which isn’t particularly rare. What sets it apart is the ability to overclock both CPUs, delivering impressive performance for its time—around 12 cores or 24 threads at 4 GHz or higher. Back then, no single socket CPU matched that level of speed until the i7 5960X. Even now, it remains a strong platform.
Sadly, dual socket boards and multi-GPU setups feel like outdated concepts; they're visually interesting but hard to use properly.
Absolutely correct. The SR2 is likely the final dual socket board worth the effort, aside from very niche situations. It only made sense because 8-core CPUs took a long time to appear on the market after that, so it faced competition from 6-core 12-thread CPUs for an extended period.
