What upgrades are needed or should we wait?
Playing BG3 and Cyberpunk mainly, but might explore SW Outlaws or Wukong. Not in a rush to upgrade.
System specs: 3900x, 4070 Ti, 16gb RAM, LG C4 42" OLED.
Current gaming experience at 3840x2160p is decent, but I'm curious if upgrading would be worthwhile.
Funding is not a concern, though I tend to be cautious.
Any suggestions?
Not worth it unless you truly need to boost the settings. RTX4090 is ideal for a noticeable improvement. You could push the CPU to its limits with a 5900x or a 5800X3D if you're aiming for a slight gain, though at 4K that would be minimal. Adding 32GB of RAM would be a budget-friendly upgrade if you notice high memory consumption. I recommend holding off and checking what Blackwell brings in the near future, possibly another six months or more.
There are several options available, but many will be restricted in multiplayer games due to screen effects. MSI Afterburner is the most popular choice. It requires some configuration to determine what gets shown. You can also use alt+tab to open Task Manager and check memory usage from the performance tab, which records data for about a minute.
The task manager displays in BG3 that there is roughly 1 to 3 GB of free space, while the in-use usage is around 14 GB, with approximately 2 GB compressed. Would increasing RAM by another 16 GB improve this situation?
It seems textures are stored in system memory as you accumulate more. This isn't a major issue for that specific game, just a slight delay or occasional texture flickering.
Cyberpunk does demonstrate better performance with higher system memory, around 8 to 9%.
I haven't really checked the two newer releases yet.
